Simple Chocolate Glaze Overview
- Skill Level: Beginner
- Techniques Used: How to Melt Chocolate in the Microwave
This easy chocolate glaze can be made in less than 5 minutes and is the perfect all purpose glaze for all of your baked goods! Melting the chocolate in the microwave for the glaze makes this fool proof!
This simple chocolate glaze does harden up slightly so it is perfect for making chocolate glazed donuts or for dipping eclairs. You can also drizzle it over pound cake or bundt cake!
How to Make Chocolate Glaze
STEP 1: CUT THE CHOCOLATE INTO UNIFORM PIECES
You can start with chocolate chips or chop the chocolate into uniform pieces so that they melt evenly. Put the chocolate in a heatproof bowl.
STEP 2: HEAT THE CHOCOLATE IN THE MICROWAVE
Heat the chocolate in short bursts in the microwave, stopping and stirring about every 15-20 seconds. Stop heating the chocolate when it is almost completely melted but there are still a few solid pieces.
STEP 3: STIR IN THE BUTTER
Remove the melted chocoalte from the microwave and add the butter pieces. Stir until the mixture becomes a smooth glaze. Use immediately.
Uses for Chocolate Glaze
- Dip yeast donuts to make chocolate glazed yeast donuts.
- Drizzle over classic pound cake.
- Add on top of my easy brownie recipe to make them even more decadent!
- Dip eclairs in the glaze to make a French classic!
Easy Chocolate Glaze
This basic chocolate glaze recipe can be used to glaze donuts, dip eclairs in, or drizzle over bundt cake. This glaze comes together in as little as 5 minutes!
Ingredients
- 6 oz (168 gr) bittersweet chocolate chips or chocolate chopped into roughly even pieces
- 6 TBSP (3 oz, 84 gr) unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
Instructions
- Place the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl.
- Set the cook time to 2 minutes and start the microwave. Do not step away. Stop the microwave every 15-20 seconds and stir the chocolate with a rubber spatula. At first, the chocolate will still be solidified, but this will help to evenly distribute the heat.
- As soon as the chocolate is almost completely melted with only a few solid pieces left, remove it from the microwave. This will likely not take the full 2 minutes.
- Add the butter to the bowl and stir. The heat from the melted chocolate will melt the butter and the solid chocolate pieces to create a smooth glaze. Use immediately.
Notes
Note: It is very important to stop the microwave and stir the chocolate every 15-20 seconds in order to not burn it.

I meeean…chocolate and butter. That’s pretty much heaven.
Really not anything better!
Does this “harden” at all? Or does it stay runny? Im planning on adding decorations to the sides of the cake and dont want them sliding
Hi Alicia, it set somewhat, but if you want to place decorations, I would suggest using a ganache. https://bakerbettie.com/how-to-make-ganache/ Use the ratios for the 1:1 ganache. Hope that helps!
Can you use coco instead of chunks of chocolate?

Can I use white chocolate with this recipe?
This was good. Was a little thick for drizzle, so didn’t run down and most if it stayed on top.. but it was shiny. I put some raspberries on top and it was very pretty and tasted good.
So glad you liked it! If you’d like to thin it out I suggest adding a drop or two of milk or cream.
how much is a drop or two of milk?
Too many pop-up ads. I, for one, refuse to patronize pop-up advertisers. They are a nuisance and do not have any value when I’m looking for something in particular. The same holds true for video presentations of how to make something.
Get rid of spying worthless Microsoft IExplorer and your pop ups will go away. Try Brave, Waterfox, etc. browsers for more control.

This turned into a gloppy separated mess. What did I do wrong? Used 4 oz. white chocolate and 4 oz. unsalted butter.
Hi, when using white chocolate you need to use a different ratio of ingredients. You can’t substitute. This recipe calls for a 2:1 ratio of bittersweet chocolate to butter. For white chocolate, you need to do a 3:1 ratio. So you’ll use 252 grams of white chocolate and 84 grams of butter. Hope that helps!
Can I use milk chocolate morsels? It is the only thing I have!
Way too many ads. Could never get his much of each to use. Or directions. Waste of time.
